Classics for adults

Reading the Classics in translation

I run Classical literature courses for adults where we read and discuss the Classics in translation. It’s a book club meets classroom experience where you can enjoy storytelling at its best, share & debate responses, learn about the Classical world so as to appreciate the texts at a richer level.

You only have to walk into a bookshop to see the MANY modern “takes” on Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, Ovid... Or see what’s on at the theatre (Oedipus at The Old Vic and Elektra at Duke of York currently) to see their continuing appeal. Or browse what’s coming to screen (Ralph Fiennes and Matt Damon as Odysseus).

Everyone should get the chance to have their take! But it can feel understandably daunting to read the originals without a sense of their context. And it’s a sense that does affect how you read them.

I run curated courses for small groups where I guide readers through texts and the Classical world.

I also offer bespoke courses for group and individuals in Homer, Virgil, the Greek tragedians, Roman love poetry. So if a Classical text is on your reading list, do get in touch!
